VISUAL DEFINITIONS
Course: Graphic Design
Date: 3/31/21
Size: 5 x 5 in.
Medium: Adobe Illustrator
About: Words hold deeper meanings apart from their basic letterforms. In this series I explored the ways the words themselves could literally embody their definitions while maintaining enough type information to be read as the words still. I chose three different sets of opposing words (truth and lies, safe and dangerous, silence and noise) that stood out to me because of the ambiguous nature of their meanings. For example, what about truth makes the word truth mean what it means while differing from what the word lies could mean? After a lengthy process of sketches, I finalized my designs in Illustrator to emphasize the many nuances of each word, relying on aspects such as contrast, overlap, and weight in the typographic forms.
