MY FAVORITE FOOD
Project Type: Poster Design
Year: 2021 Medium: Adobe Photoshop, Alcohol Markers Size: 6.75 x 9 in. In response to the theme of how the COVID-19 pandemic affects all people, I chose to create a poster with a focus on how the crisis emphasized the already existing discrimination and racisms that people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent experience.
While the topic of Asian hate extends across many factors and culture, I chose to focus on food specific to my own heritage from the Philippines. Food makes up a large part of my experiences with my Filipino family and culture. Yet Asian food is often stigmatized as scary, disgusting, and even dirty, reflecting a greater discrimination against the people who enjoy them. After initial evidence suggested that the Covid-19 virus began in a fresh food market in Wuhan, China, AAPI communities saw an increase in Asian hate crimes and racism that perpetuated the lie that Asian people and culture are responsible for the virus. I created this poster to highlight the duality of Asian food as a longtime source of cultural richness and unjustifiable racism. The virus is a problem that everyone struggles with regardless of where the first infections were. My culture is not the virus. |
